SCHOLARS PROGRAM 2026

The Southern Miss Graduate Training and Education Center (GTEC), is excited to announce the Scholars Program 2026 – a competitive two-year training opportunity designed to develop the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular disease research and community-engaged health sciences along the Gulf Coast.

This program aims to strengthen graduate students’ knowledge, research skills, and professional networks while fostering meaningful community partnerships. Scholars will receive mentorship, specialized training, and funding support to conduct impactful research addressing cardiovascular health disparities in Mississippi and beyond.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Accepted into a biomedical or health-related graduate program
  • Full-time enrollment in a graduate program by Fall 2026
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in cardiovascular disease research
  • Commitment to fulfilling all two-year program requirements

Program Objectives

  • Build Knowledge and Skills in cardiovascular and community-based research
  • Enhance Research Capacity through mentorship and training
  • Promote Community Engagement and trust-based partnerships
  • Foster Professional Development and career readiness

Overview of Key Dates for 2026-2028 Scholars:

    • May to July 2026 – Attend orientation and full-time summer intensive, including enrolled courses, in residence at USM
    • September 2026 to April 2026 – Participate in virtual workshops and meetings (~ 1-2 per month)
    • May 2027 – Attend 1-week summer training in residence at USM and culmination event to receive Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Foundational Digital Badge
    • June 2027 to July 2027 – Present at Mississippi Health Disparities Conference and participate in virtual mentorship activities
    • September – April 2028 – Participate in a 3 credit hour leadership course, community outreach events, and virtual meetings (~ 1-2 per month)
    • May 2028 – Attend culmination event to receive Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Proficiency Transcripted and Digital Badge
